Analysis of a Bhava I- Significations of Houses

INTRODUCTION
Analysis of bhavas is the first step to be taken in interpretation of the horoscope. Though many things have been written on this so far, there are many inconsistencies in the books written by various authors. These inconsistencies tend to discourage any new students of Jyotisha. Thus this article strives to present the subject in a very systematic manner and hopes that the Jyotish enthusiasts and the beginners would gain substantially from this.


The article is divided into various sections starting from the significations of Bhavas; General strengths and weaknesses of bhava; Generic effect of Benefics and malefics in the bhavas and the specific effect of all the planets in the different bhavas. I however admit that this article is no way comprehensive and leaves enough room for improvement. I shall modify/ add sections to this as and when time permits.

Marriage compatibility is an important contribution of Jyotish to the world as only it can foresee any problems in the married life of a couple and can precisely determine which area shall the problem root from. This is done with kuta matching as enumerated by Harihara in his immortal classic Prasna Marga. Progeny in Jyotish II: Number & sex of children

Number of children 1. The number of children can be found out by counting the Navamsa gained by the 5th lord. For example, the 5th lord is placed in Virgo Rasi and Gemini Navamsa. Counting from Gemini (Navamsa) to Virgo Rasi [Virgo (6) - Gemini (3) = 3], we have four signs, i.e., the 5th lord has to gain three Navamsas to reach Virgo or upto three children should be anticipated (COVA- Page 190). This is however a crude method can can be used with care. Max. no. of child = Rasi sign – Navamsa Sign Pt. Rath says that, for this method to work, the 5th lord should be placed with the Jupiter (Karaka for Navamsa). However, from an illustration given in Page 200 of COVA, we see that this is not a necessary condition. Here Mars is not associated or aspected by Jupiter, but the Lagna is aspected by Jupiter from the 7th, through Rasi and Graha Drsti both. Here we might conclude that for this method to work, Jupiter should be strongly placed in the horoscope and influence the factors of progeny.

Badhakasthana & Badhakesh

Introduction In Prasna Marga, Harihara has given the analysis of an horsocope based on Badhaka point of view. He says that for all movable signs, the 11th house therefrom is the badhaka sthana, for all fixed signs, the 9th therefrom are their badhakasthana and for all the dual signs, the 7th therefrom are their badkasthanas. Thus for the 12 signs of the zodiac, the badhakasthanas are: In this method, the quadrants of the house of harm can also be harmful. This is based on the principle of Paraspara Karaka i.e. doing each other’s job when the planets/signs are placed in mutual quadrants. Paraspara Karaka means, you pat my back and I shall pat yours or you kick my back and I shall kick yours. The patting or kicking is dependent on the natural relationship of the planets under consideration. Thus if natural enemies are placed in the quadrants, they shall fight and when natural friends are placed in such position, they shall work with each other in harmony. From the placement
